What is a flange gasket?
In piping,a gasket is sealing material placed between connecting flanges to create a static seal,which will maintain the leakage proof sealing in all operating conditions.Different types of gaskets are used to achieve the leak proof sealing between the pipe flange.The primary function of gaskets is to seal the irregularities of each face of the flange so that there will be no leakage of the service fluid from the flange joint.
Types of flange gasket?
There are six common types of flange gasket used in piping.
Graphite gasket
Graphite flange gaskets used in pipeline
The graphite gasket is a flat gasket made of soft graphite.It is suitable for high temperature,highly corrosive media.
Metallic gasket
Metallic gaskets
There are three main types:
Octagonal and elliptical gaskets-suitable for RTJ flange sealing surfaces;
Solid metal serrated gasket is to machine a bevel-shaped corrugation on the sealing surface of the metal flat gasket – suitable for the MFMflange sealing surface;
Lens Ring gasket-suitable for lens flange sealing surfaces.
Metallic gaskets are available in a variety of materials such as pure iron,very mild steel,stainless steel,and aluminum.
Metallic gasket sealing surface has high requirements for processing precision and surface roughness.The bolts have a large pressing force and are used in high temperature and high pressure valves.
316L spiral wound gasket
The most widely used composite type gasket is a spiral wound gasket.Spiral Wound Gaskets are manufactured by spirally winding a V shaped metal strip and a strip of non-asbestos filler material.The metal strip holds the filler, providing the gasket with mechanical resistance and resilience. Spiral wound gaskets can be reinforced by an outer centering ring and/or inner retaining ring.It is generally used for MFM flange sealing surfaces and is suitable for high temperature and medium pressure valves.
Mata-jacketed graphite gasket
Mata jacket graphite gaskets
It is made of a thin metal coated ring asbestos gasket.Generally used in the MFM flange sealing surface and is suitable for high temperature and high pressure valves.
PTFE gasket
PTFE gasket
It is generally used for the TF and GF sealing surface.There are mainly two kinds of materials: PTFE and glass fiber PTFE. It is suitable for highly corrosive media of lower temperatures and various pressures.
Asbestos rubber gasket
Asbestos rubber gaskets
Asbestos rubber gaskets include universal asbestos sheets and anti-corrosion asbestos sheets, and generally use asbestos sheets, acid-resistant asbestos sheets, oil-resistant asbestos sheets, and metal wire asbestos sheets.It is suitable for higher temperature and medium pressure valves.
It is suitable for FF sealing surface,MFM sealing surface and TF and GF sealing surface.
Advantages: good corrosion resistance and thermal stability,good plasticity,and sealing with a small pressing force.
Disadvantages: low strength,easy to stick to the flange.
